Rajamaa. A family-business

From the start in 1986, Rajamaa has been run by the Malmström family.

Rajamaa is truly a family business, run by the Malmström family since the start in 1986. It is situated on an island in the River Muonio, the river that unites Sweden with Finland. The name of the island is Pitkäsaari (Long Island), and the village is Muonionalusta. It has seven inhabitants, of which Kaisu and Lars are two.

From time to time our grown-up children are helping us, and have done so all their childhood. Except the family here is also working the kitchen-aid, cleaners and, of course, guides, depending on season. The daily language among the staff is Finnish, which is the language of the valley. Rajamaa consists of a main building, with reception, dining-room and sauna. We have 5 smaller hotel-chalets of 25 sqm, with 2 beds and 5 bigger hotel-chalets of 46 sqm with two small bed-rooms with 2 beds each. All chalets are equipped with shower/WC, mini-kitchen and electrical drying closet. In our prices are always included bed-linen and towels. All the hotel-chalets have been renovated during 2018.

For Rajamaa, the work with sustainability is very important. Being members in the Swedish Ecotourism Society and branded as Nature’s Best Sweden is an important part of this work. All our guests will see this during their stay here, in things like sorting all garbage and minimizing the use of transports and motor vehicles. The striving for use of local food in the restaurant kitchen is also essential. We that work here at Rajamaa take pride in letting this be a part of the everyday life here on our island.
