The rivers Könkämä, Muonio and Tornio form the 540 km long border that unites Sweden with Finland. Here in the wilderness three cultures meet, Finnish, Swedish and Saami (Lapp). A thrilling different part of Scandinavia, known as Lapland.
On an island in the river Muonio, looking out over two countries, lays Rajamaa. We have fully equipped chalets and a little restaurant.
Here, some 200 km above the Arctic Circle, Lapland is at its best and cleanest, with deep forests, mighty rivers and the mountains rising at the horizon.
Here You can enjoy the clean untouched Lapland, its nature, people and their rare culture.
During some days You will, far away from the everyday worries, experience the genuine fascinating Lapland where man still lives in harmony with nature.
The Malmström family, hosts at Rajamaa since the start 1986, welcomes You as our guest.
26/12 At the airport in Kittilä, our bus is ready to take us through the wintry forests of Lapland. We head westward towards the Muonio River and after 1 hour we reach Rajamaa. We install ourselves in the nice fully equipped chalets, and then the dinner is served in the restaurant.
27/12 After a steady breakfast and after we have made some sandwiches for the lunch we gather outside. Led by the skilled guide we make a walk through the wintry landscape to learn more about the rare nature of Lapland. A tour everyone can participate in. Tracks of birds and animals in the snow, trees and bushes adapted to the harsh climate among with other nature phenomena of the Taiga, will be described. We eat our lunch by a flaming log fire in the forest, before walking back to Rajamaa.
The afternoon can be used to more sculpturing, or to try cross country skiing or “kick-sledging”. Dinner at the restaurant.
28/12 After breakfast we visit the Arctic Sledge dog Centre with 200 huskies and other sledge-dogs of different sizes. You will be guided in Husky land and learn about the life of the dogs, their training and behaviour. We make a sledge tour about 17 km.1-2 persons/sledge.
Afterwards we return to Rajamaa and dinner at the restaurant.
29/12 The day at free disposal. As option possible try driving a snow-mobile, or cross-country skiing. Dinner at the restaurant.
30/12 After breakfast we go, by bus, to Peltovuoma in Finland to meet the Eira family. This Saami family lives in between modern life and an ancient form of rein-deer herding. We will get to hear about the rare culture, about old days and today’s work with the animals. Jouni Eira will show us how he works and we will drive out to where the heard is moving. We eat a lunch inspired by Lapland before we drive back to Rajamaa loaded with new impressions. Dinner at the restaurant.
31/12 After breakfast, we gather outside to get instructions in making “snow sculptures”. First we prepare everything by making cubes of snow, cubes that will be transferred into sculptures. Soon everyone is busy creating in this natural material.
There will be a special Sylvester Dinner in the restaurant. When the time gets close to the Finnish New Year we follow the lightened path down to the river, where we will be unique by standing on the ice of the river with one foot in each Year. Sparkling wine and log fire on a small island.
